Ingalls Summer 2022 Intern Midterm Review: Henry Chester

In this Intern Midterm Review, we hear from Henry Chester about his experience working at Ingalls and what's next in his cybersecurity career journey.

Henry ChesterOur Summer 2022 intern cohort has four cyber-hungry interns who’ve eagerly jumped into learning what it’s like working in a Security Operations Center (SOC). Now that we’ve reached the internship halfway point, we thought it was time to conduct a midterm interview to learn what life’s really like inside the SOC at Ingalls! Read on to hear from our amazing intern Henry Chester.

What have you learned about working within a SOC during this internship?

My absolute favorite thing to learn about was the SIEM and how a SOC team works.

What's the most interesting threat actor attempt you've seen?

I think the most creative approaches I've seen have been in phishing emails. Some of the emails submitted have taken me some in-depth research to classify. Some are really creative and well planned. I’m sure more senior analysts have seen some interesting network attempts.

How has this internship influenced your outlook and career path in cybersecurity?

Experiencing working with a team and doing the actual work has confirmed that I love the field! It’s thrilling to investigate and use multiple tools to come to a conclusion.

What are your favorite resources for what's happening in cybersecurity?

I like @Simply Cyber, @Wired, and @Threatpost. I will also google “Top cybersecurity news today” and see if there is anything interesting.

What are your activities/educational goals for the next year?

My top cybersecurity goals are to finish studying for, and get my Security+, Blue Team Level 1 cert, and start getting into CTFs. Outside of cybersecurity would include going to the gym consistently and reading non-school related books.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time to reach work-life balance?

I enjoy writing, traveling, and going to the gym.
