The people have spoken and chose the GRC Manager as the most challenging role in Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC). Take it from one of our very own Director of Professional Services, Scotlyn (Monk) Clark, who discusses how she manages the challenges of this role.
How do you find balance with this position?
I accept that there will be times of chaos and times where there’s still plenty to do, but it’s okay to slow down and take time to make up for the chaotic times. We’re always busy, there’s always something to do, but there are times when the requirements are less pressing or less time-sensitive, and that’s where you give yourself grace and catch your breath. Recognize that while everything is important, some things can wait.
How do you stay engaged with handling the role?
I really feed off of my team’s energy and client satisfaction. When my team is excited about the work we’re doing or a new project we’re proposing/starting, it ignites my passion for the work we are doing and the quality services I know our clients are receiving. When we get engagement from clients, positive feedback, or even just acknowledgment of the value our services and cybersecurity, in general, provide them, it reminds me of why we do this every day and makes me want to do it even more. I love when our clients are happy and feel like they are receiving valuable services and I love when my team is enthusiastic about the work we’re doing.
How do you deal with the challenges of your role/position?
Wine and venting to my husband. Haha! No but seriously, I try to put myself in the position of the person(s) I’m dealing with to better perceive where they are coming from and it usually gives me the perspective I need to be understanding and more patient. Sometimes it also helps me to modify my approach for more effective results.
For challenges that aren’t client or project-specific, I focus on prioritization. As I mentioned, there are always things that need to be done, so understanding my priorities is a must, along with setting reasonable expectations for myself and my team.
